Simple and easy to cook porridge

I was not feeling very well since last Friday. I wanted to eat something soupy but my place really not much choice when comes to Chinese food. Therefore, i decided to cook myself porridge. Frankly speaking, I'm not a person that likes porridge, not even when I'm sick. i also do not understand how come suddenly i got the "mood" to eat porridge.

Ok, let's see what i have in my fridge and what porridge can i cook. well well well.. let's have a vegetarian meal!

wash the rice and put in water, depends on
you like sticky porridge or watery porridge.
As for me, i prefer more water.

half carrot, chop chop chop..

i only have long beans in my fridge, but i think,
french bean will be much nicer!

vegetarian ham, chop into small chunks.
if you don't have this, you can add chicken/meat,
depends on what you have in the fridge.

turn on the gas and wait till it boils.

put everything in, put low fire, boil until
the rice soft. (of cos depends on how soft
you like to eat. hehe..)
about half an hour later...

add in some soy sauce and
my dinner is ready! taste good too.

Ikan Bakar at Kelana Jaya

It was lunch time, me and my colleague, SH, couldn't make up our mind on what to eat. We were already kind of jelak with the food that we always eat after working here for so many years. We walk walk walk and suddenly we saw a lot of ppl surrounding a van. Hmm, what's that? Ikan Bakar!! Wow!! Looks really nice too. Therefore we decided to try.

It was just opposite the old giant at kelana jaya (opposite baker's cottage, kings). There are a lot of van truck there selling malay kuih, malay mixed rice and etc. This ikan bakar van are quite far away from these van. If i'm not mistaken, the van that sells ikan bakar is called 'Ikan Bakar Fed'. (if i'm not mistaken lar..cos i was busy staring at those ikan bakar. hehe..

i ordered a bowl of cendol, RM 1
very refreshing as the weather was very hot.

Ikan Pari with rice + a small plate of
sambal belacan and a small bowl of
asam, RM 4.80

You can choose either Ikan Pari or another kind of fish, sorry, forgot the name. Besides that, you also can opt for nasi lemak instead of white rice. If you don't like fish, they also got other dishes such as sambal sotong, fried chicken and etc.

It was such a satisfying meal. The asam and the sambal belacan are SOOOOOOOO nice!! No wonder so many ppl surrounding the van. It's cheap, it's tasty!! I definitely will go makan again some day!!

Sweet Potato Donut (Kuih Keria)

I don't really like donut but i love this sweet potato donut, kuih keria. It's a kind of malay kuih which you can often see it at those malay stalls that sells nasi lemak in the morning. How this kuih keria looks like? It's like a much smaller version of donut and it's in dark brown color coated with sugar.

It seems easy to prepare, we only need sweet potato, flour, oil and sugar. Maybe I should try to make it myself since i like it that much!

Is there any non spicy food for Malay?

9 out of 10 malay dishes are spicy. Sometimes i wonder, is there any malay that can't take spicy food? If yes, then how ar? Since almost all their food are spicy, curry lar, sambal lar, even vege they also fry with cili padi. hehe..

We chinese, when we are heaty or having sore throat, we will choose to eat something soupy, or porriage, but if malay ar, their sup (sup ekor and etc) all also spicy one wor, how ar? By the way, I think i never see got any malay stall that sells porriage, does that means malay don't eat porriage?

Me and my colleagues went out for lunch at a mamak near our office, raining mar, so find a place which is near to the office. I ordered nasi goreng and it looks nice. Nicely arrrange, the rice they make it round round on the plate. I tried and it taste good too. SS2 Murni

It had been years (i also don't know how many years, many many years lar!) since I last ate at Murni. Last time always lepak there especially when I was still in college, stay around there mar. We were there at about 7pm+ on a Saturday night and there were already a lot a lot of ppl. We waited for a while for them to place more tables on the street. Last time they only occupied a few car park lots but now, almost the whole street!! Geng.. I wonder how much they earn per day!!

When we asked for the menu, the young guy with big eyes that serves us said no menu. I don't know he lazy to take or there's really no menu. So long never come liao, how I know got what to eat? When we asked him to intro, he said, got nasi goreng with chicken chop. We asked him what else? He said, nasi goreng chicken chop again!! alamak, no other food meh? Then he said spaghetti , and nasi goreng chicken chop. Aiseh, ok ok ok ok , since he kept saying nasi goreng chicken chop, then we might as well try that la. For drinks we ordered a hot milo and a medium mango juice. FL decided to go take the mix rice since we don't know what else to order.

FL came back with these.
hmm, looks nice hor..
RM 5 for this place of rice which consists of
vege, a fried chicken and a few sotong balls.

When FL almost finished half of his rice, my hot milo arrived. Where's the mango juice? Not yet, have to wait. ok then.. And we waited for another 10-15 minutes before my nasi goreng chicken chop served.

nasi goreng chicken chop.
looks nice hor, but actually, it doesn't
taste nice at all!!
The food is cold when served, rice no taste,
chicken chop not nice, i guess the best is the keropok lar..

Where's the mango juice? Food almost finish already but still no sight of the mango juice? We saw the guy that took our order, so FL asked him. You know what he said to us? Tunggu lar, kalau tidak, cancel order lar!! Wah seh... what kind of attitude wor.. teruk lar...

When we almost finished our food, the mango juice only arrived. ~sigh.. who said mamak is cheap? I don't know how much is that nasi goreng chicken chop, but the whole meal took us RM 19.80!! Food not nice, service not good, environment not good and price is expensive!! Aih, how come Murni become like that? Last time their food very nice one wor..

How to get rid of rice bug ('kuk ngao')?

Do you always buy a big packet of rice? 5kg? 10kg? If you cook everyday, you probably won't have this problem. But for ppl like me that does not cook everyday, or even cook also cook a little bit of rice, 5kg of rice i can eat for a few months or even one whole year!! You might say, buy less lar, yes yes, there's one time i bought 1kg of brown rice and 1kg of red rice to mix, end up still eat for a very long time. When the rice put too long, the rice bug ('kuk ngao') will come. If you ignore it and leave it for a few weeks, it probably will end up the rice bug more than the rice!! Yes TRUST me, don't under estimate these rice bug!!

How to prevent this to happen? My aunt taught me this, let say you buy 5kg of rice, you know you will take a long time to finish it. Split the 5kg into 5 small packets and put into the fridge. When you finished 1kg, you take another packet out. and before you take the packet of rice out from the fridge, put the rice into the freezer for an hour. She said this will kill all the germs in the rice wor.. so that it won't easily got rice bug. Then after that you only put it outside.

I haven't try this myself, but will try it. If you are like me always fighting with the rice bug, no harm trying lar!!

Fish Head Meehun? Where to find?

Few yrs back when I was still studying in college, I always go to this chinese coffee shop at Uptown there (now becomes star buck, opposite is OCBC Bank) and eat the Fish Head Meehun. So far that's the best fish head meehun I've ever had. The fish is very fresh, the soup is very nice and the best thing is, you can have the option to choose 'chou mai fun' (thick mee hun). It was sooooooooo nice and I can never forget the taste!

When I started working, I didn't have time to go there for a few months. Then when i went there one day, the shop dissapeared and since then I don't know where to eat this fish head meehun anymore. Any of you tried the stall that i mentioned? Any idea where the auntie go? Or got any nice fish head meehun stall to intro to me?

tomatoes, parsley and onions on
Italian herb crust.

Hmm, this whole Italiano thing quite nice, I love the Italiano Bruschetta (if more garlic taste even better!!) and the Italiano Paradiso Pizza. The whole meal including tax is RM 32.09. Yum yum, what a satisfying and fattening lunch!! :)

Charcoal Roasted Coffee

I only recently found out that the charcoal roasted coffee really smells a lot nicer and taste a lot nicer than normal coffee. Few months ago, I tasted the NanYang 2 in 1 Charcoal Roasted Coffee at my aunts place. It smells and taste soooo good! I went out to seek for it and found it. After i finished the packet that i bought, I went to hunt for it again. This time, I bought the wrong packet, everything is the same except one with charcoal roasted, one without. The one without charcoal roasted one really cannot fight with the roasted one lar..Since then I know if want to buy these 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 coffee, must look for charcoal roasted one. Trust me, it's really a lot nicer!!

Fu Zhou Biscuit (福州饼) from Yong Peng

After finish eating fish balls at Yong Peng Yuan Yuen Fish Ball (元延正宗永平西刀鱼丸), we asked the boss where can we find 'Fu Zhou Biscuit' (福州饼). He told us across the road we can find a shop that sells 'Fu Zhou Biscuit' (of cos not the shop that my father brought me to lar..)

The boss asked us to look for damacai, the shop is just beside it. It was still raining heavily, luckily it's quite easy to find.

sorry lar, raining heavily, this is the best shot
i can get. hehe..

I asked for 'Guang Bing' (光饼) but the auntie told me finished already. Aiseh, I purposely go there buy 'Guang Bing' leh.. Then the auntie intro another kind of biscuit to us. Well, go there liao, no matter wat must buy some mar right?

10 pieces of 'Fu Zhou Bing' (福州饼) for RM 7

This 'Fu Zhou Bing' is different than the 'Guang Bing' that i wanted to buy. There's nothing inside guang bing but there's peanut in this 'Fu Zhou Bing'.

square square..

peanut inside.

When i first heard peanut, the first thing in my mind is.. OMG must be very sweet, but trust me, it's not. Although it's not as nice as the guang bing but still consider ok. It's worth to try, if you go Yong Peng, remember to try ya!!

Nando's @ One Utama

I've been to Nando's not more than 5 times. How come? I like spicy food, but I don't like their chili sauce. I don't like sour type of chili sauce. Anyway, although I don't like it, but a lot of other ppl love it. How i know? See Nando's opening more and more branches than i know lar, and their food also getting more and more expensive lor!!

When FL suggested to go Nando's for dinner, I was like.. errr.. really want Nando's meh? After a second thought, I decided to give it another chance. So long never eat already, maybe it taste better now leh??

nice wor.. their chili sauce holder..

Ice Cappuccino, RM 9.50
(super super expensive and NOT nice at all!!)
and
Sparkling Apple, RM 5.30
(not bad!!)

1/4 chicken (rice and coleslaw) - Hot, RM 13.50

1/4 chicken with salad and peri chips - Hot, RM 13.50

The coleslaw and the peri chips not bad, the salad so so only and the rice? Totally tasteless! As for the chicken, well well, I still doesn't like it lar. hehe, I only ate half of the 1/4 chicken. Although I doesn't like it, FL seems to enjoy it. So altogether with service and gov tax, our bill = RM 48.07. What a meal...~sigh

Yong Peng Yuan Yuen Fish Ball (元延正宗永平西刀鱼丸)

When we were on our way back last Sunday (after being a good citizen, hehe..), we decided to stop by Yong Peng. For what? Well, long long time ago, when there's still no highway, whenever we travel back to JB, or from JB we travel to somewhere, we will passed by Yong Peng. If i'm not mistaken I was still in primary school and we were at Yong Peng, my father buy us the 'Fu Zhou Biscuit' (福州饼). Round round big big cheap cheap Fu Zhou Biscuit. I can still remember the smell after so long!!

Ever since there's highway, I never been to Yong Peng anymore! That is why we decided to stop by Yong Peng, I hope can get some 'Fu Zhou' Biscuit. The minute we turned into Yong Peng, it rain heavily. ~sigh, it's even more difficult to find lar like that...

We chose this shop is because there were a lot of ppl there as compared to other shops. and also, this shop is the biggest lar..

What's the difference between this fu zhou fish ball and the normal fish ball? Well, this fu zhou fish ball is very much bigger!!

why it's bigger cos inside got meat lar..
if you like meat, you will LOVE this fu zhou fish ball.
As for me, i still prefer the normal fish ball. hehe..

The whole meal took us RM 16.80. Ya, quite expensive lar for a fish ball meal. hehe.. After makan makan, have to go find my Fu Zhou biscuit lar!!

Rak Thai @ Gardens, Mid Valley City

I miss the food in Bangkok very much, especially the mango and papaya salad! My favorite!! Not to mention the tom yam kung.. arggg...these mouth watering food always in my mind. When I went to the gardens last weekend, this restaurant immediately caught my attention!!

Rak Thai, sorry the pic not very clear, hehe..

I walked near to see the menu, hmm, the price are very reasonable. In fact, I didn't expect I can find food with these price at the Gardens!! We walked in and immediate the lady boss came near us. I think she's from Thai as she can speak Thai very well, besides that, she can speak good Cantonese too. All her staff were Thai.

It was around 9pm and she told us most of the food were sold off. Wow, so early? Only left the pineapple fried rice, green curry chicken, tom yam kung and somtam (papaya salad). Well, since only got these, then we ordered these lor.

2 soya bean, RM 2.50 each

Somtam (papaya salad), Rm 4.90
hmm, this is nice, of cos not as nice
as the one i ate in Bangkok, but consider
very nice also la..

When the lady boss served us this, she told us all their food finished, that includes the one that we ordered too!! What??!! Then she said she will treat us this somtam, and kept saying sorry to us. Ok lor, got free somtam... later go find some other food lor. Who knows, not even 1 minute, she came back again with our food. She said still got.. apa la.. so this somtam still belanja us or not? hehe..Then she said the pineapple fried rice still got, but the green curry finished already.

Thai Pineapple Fried Rice, RM 12.90,
not bad lar, very strong pineapple smell..

tom yam gai soup (tom yam chicken soup),
RM 6.90
hmm, this one so so only...

dessert, the lady boss belanja one..
hehe, maybe she also feel embarassed lar, a while
said got food, a while said no food..

So end up got treat us the Somtam or not? Of cos .. NOT lar. wuahahahahhaa.. Total bill = RM 32.67 including 10% tax. Not bad not bad, think will visit this place again.. but have to go earlier lar, else all the food also finished liao..

Steamboat and BBQ at my house!

I promised I will tell you guys whether the steamboat and bbq pot nice to use or not. Well, so far so good lar.. not too bad, but one thing is the steamboat quite slow in heating, other than that, everything is ok lar..

here's what we have for steamboat and bbq, quite a lot of things for 4 person lar. hehe.. got crabs, prawns, fish, meat, chicken, wan tan, sotong, meat ball, fish paste, vege, mushrooms, kimchi, seaweed, chivas and many more. and of cos, we were not able to finish all these food, hehe, too much lar..

One thing not good having bbq is that your whole house will become very smelly and sticky. hehe.. I think I should not on the fan while having bbq lar.. But overall it is still an enjoyable meal. Go get one lar, if you like steamboat too. Eating at home is much more fun than eating outside, erm, except the preparing and cleaning up part. hehe..

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Finally.. I got myself a BBQ Steamboat Pot

After search high and low, left and right, to all hypermarkets (carrefour, giant, tesco), finally I managed to get a BBQ Steamboat Pot.

BBQ steamboat Pot, RM 178

after surveying around, I finally decided to get it in Carrefour, their one more expensive, RM 199, but it seems like it has better quality. Who knows when i go Carrefour to buy it, they told me no stock. Then I went to Giant, to get the RM 188 one, but only realized the one in Giant doesn't allow me to control the heat. ~sigh.. so end up go Tesco to get this for RM 178.

So nice to use or not? Don't know yet, later will use it. Then only let you guys know lar. hehe..
